CORONET ELVSTROM 38
General
The Coronet Elvstrøm 38 is a sailboat designed by the famous Danish racing sailor Paul Elvstrøm. She is a motor-cruiser that offers a combination of speed and comfort. The Elvstrøm 38’s unique feature is her bulbous bow, which is intended to modify the waves generated by the bow as it travels through the water, thus flattening the resultant wave pattern along the hull, reducing drag and in turn increasing hull speed and also reducing pitching. This type of bow is used on ships to reduce drag and reduce fuel consumption.
The boat has a sleek design with clean lines and a low-profile cabin. It has a large wheelhouse with plenty of seating and a spacious deck for easy maneuverability. She is a sturdily built motor sailor with GRP/Balsa hull and deck, a solid lead fin keel ballast and a skeg hung rudder. The boat was built in 1977 by Botved Boats of Denmark. Her balsa core hull makes her light and well insulated while her lead ballast keel makes her stable. The under water areas were epoxy treated in by a previous owner. This was completed as a preventative measure due to the hull’s age.

Accommodation
The accommodation is spread over four defined areas; the bow cabin with gangway storage and heads, the saloon, the wheelhouse and the aft cabin. Due to the central cockpit she has a large aft cabin. Here are two large berths which, with the addition of an infill cushion makes a snug double. The aft cabin has four windows. These are fitted with curtains for privacy. The hull is lined for increased insulation and comfort. There is storage beneath the berths and access to the steering quadrant and an autohelm actuator. There are two loudspeakers to provide acoustic entertainment, a fire extinguisher and electronics for the solar panels and active radar transducer. A lockable double door with hatch provides access.
The main saloon has full standing headroom and is entered from the port side of the wheelhouse. One step down and immediately to port is the radio station area with switch panel, chart reading lights two FM receivers and a CD changer, two fixed VHF transceivers and one portable. A NASA CRT NAVTEX is mounted on the radio table. The chart table is in the wheelhouse. Aft, set in the bulkhead, are three drawers and another draw beneath the radio station seat all full with useful small parts.
Immediately forward on the port side is the linear galley. There is a gas fueled, gymballed, ENO stove with 3-burner hob and oven. The Stainless Steel sink has pressurized hot and cold water and a manual water pump in case of power failure. Five storage units are fitted below the work top and three above, in the portboard hull. The fridge is built into the forward bulkhead and has an ice compartment. Instead of the conventional door, there is a smaller opening that allows better insulated access from the gangway. A minimum of 5 cm of insulation keeps the fridge efficient.
Opposite the galley is the large seating/dining area. You can sit eight adults round this table with ease. Storage is below the seats and along the starboard hull. The Webasto heating control is mounted together with the SmartGauge battery monitor and an engine hours meter on the rear facing bulkhead. The single pedestal table drops to convert this to a large double berth with fitted cushions.
There is a gangway between the saloon and the forward cabin. To port are a locker under the fridge, two hanging wardrobes and to starboard is the heads. The heads has a molded sink unit with pull out shower head. It hides a 25 litre gray water tank that is used to flush the toilet. The marine toilet has a manual pump and a 25 litre black water tank. Storage units for toiletries are provided.
The fore cabin has a V-berth and a deck hatch above. An infill cushion converts the berth to a double. There is storage below berths, access to windlass switches, and lights above each V-berth.
All cabins are fitted with 12V LED lighting. Fabrics and interior joinery are in good order. Carpets were originally fitted for additional cold weather comfort but have been removed by previous owners.

The bow has a large stainless steel protection plate to prevent damage when anchoring. The decks are molded in non slip for increased grip. The raised combings round the deck increases hull rigidity and raises the effective height of the guard wires. Forward of the wheelhouse is the coach-roof. This is fitted with stainless steel grab rails. In the bow is the anchor locker with hatch. A Lewmar electric windlass with 8 mm chain gypsy is fitted. The stainless steel pulpit is connected to stainless steel stanchions and double set of guard wires.
The central wheelhouse is made with a half permanent GRP and glass structure and half removable coverings. The forward part has three wind screens each fitted with windscreen wipers. the side sections are fitted with large windows which combined give the helmsman and crew an uninterrupted vista of what is going on around them. This boat has had a modification, and the canvas roof panel has been replaced by a solid cover, making the wheelhouse more rain proof. The sides and rear are canvas which unzip / unclip. The cockpit is large, self draining and is fitted with wheel steering on a binnacle. Comfortable cushions make this a very pleasant place to sit. A removable table attached to the binnacle turns the wheelhouse into a place for entertainment in calm waters.
Engines & Electrics
The yacht was re-engined in 2007 when the original Volvo was replaced by a Yanmar 4JH4E inboard diesel. This 56hp unit offers economy and reliability and will push the hull along at over 7 knots. Normal economic cruising is 6 knots at 2000 rpm. The engine start panel is mounted in the cockpit with rev counter, oil pressure, engine temperature, digital hour meter and exhaust temperature. At 1898 hours, in 2017, the engine was removed and completely overhauled. The engine has now completed just short of 2000 hours.
When the new engine was installed, the engine bay was stripped and painted. New engine mounts, with a new propeller shaft with python drive and thrust plate for the three bladed Maxprop feathering propeller. She has two fuel tanks which can be operated independently of each other. They are made from plastic and were completely cleaned out with the engine refurbishment.
In the engine compartment there is a large shelf for tool kits as well as access to fuel and one water tank. A bank of 4x12V 105 Ah batteries provide domestic power. The engine is started with a small AGM battery. These are recharged via the Sterling Alternator to Battery charger or Sterling battery shore power charger.
Sails and Rigging
This vessel is equally at home under sail, engine or both. Her light hull, powerful rig makes her a delight to handle in the faintest of breezes. She is designed for heavy weather though and her over engineered deck fittings and chain plates provide a sense of security. The stainless steel rigging is of large diameter.
The four main sheet winches are self tailing, 2-speed Lewmars and in excellent condition. The lines are led aft to the cockpit and the boat can be easily sailed short handed from within the closed cockpit. The main-sheet track is mounted on the aft deck within easy reach of the helm. All the running rigging is braid on braid or dyneema. There is an inner forestay with deck fitting for flying an inner jib or storm canvas which is mounted on a Hoyt jib boom for self tacking. The yacht is rigged for a spinnaker with track mounted to front of mast. Quick release spinnaker pole fitting.
Sails include mainsail fitted with in boom furling and reefing. The genoa has Selden roller furling.
Aft deck
The raised aft deck has teak topped stainless steel guardrails. It gives access to the davits, on which the rigid plastic tender is mounted. This has two Suzuki outboard motors, an old two stroke and a modern four stroke. A Danbouy pole and horseshoe float are mounted on the aft rail. A Danforth kedge sits on the aft deck retained to the railing. Two deployable solar panels are mounted on the side railings and a flexible panel lies on the aft deck itself. The antennas for the ADS-B / VHF, the radar target enhancer and Navtex are also mounted on the aft deck and railing.
